Arts Education for Students of All Ages

Teaching Philosophy

The arts teach divergent rather than convergent thinking. They ask students to come up with different, rather than similar solutions. The arts are able to break through the confines of true-false, name-this, memorize that, because for every problem there may be many correct answers.

When we involve students in creative problem solving, we invite their participation as partners in the learning process. Instead of being told what to think, the arts require the students to sort out their own reactions and articulate them through the medium at hand. They discover their own answers for themselves through their own inventions. This requires critical thinking, analysis, judgment, and students tend to stay on track because they are creating their own worlds, not replicating someone else's. Being able to think independently is the basis of creativity and is also an engaging way to learn. Because the arts cultivate the imaginative thought process they energize the motivation to learn.

I believe that engagements with the arts can contribute significantly and uniquely to personal development in changing one's outlook and in-look, thought process and abilities, and generally making one more capable to cope. All art forms function as tools of expression and expand the ability to communicate and enrich the essence of our own human spirit.
